SUMMARY:Prof. Saleemul Huq Memorial Public Lecture on Promoting Climate Justice: Roles of Courts and Youth
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThe concept of Climate Justice is basically rooted in the principle of proportionality and the polluter-pays principle. It stipulates that responsibilities for addressing vulnerabilities\, impacts\, and responses to climate change should be determined according to historical pollution levels in the atmosphere. Moreover\, vulnerable developing countries ought to receive financial\, technological\, and capacity building support from polluting countries based on their vulnerabilities. However\, the concept of Climate Justice is not adequately reflected in policies and practices. Legal communities across various jurisdictions are making efforts to compel polluters to pay for climate-related loss and damage. Concurrently\, youth and children have emerged as crucial stakeholders in the multistakeholder governance approach to climate change. This lecture aims to present some innovative\, solution-oriented thoughts on climate litigations and meaningful youth engagement to promote climate justice. \nProfessor Saleemul Huq was a leading advocate for promoting climate justice. Over the past three decades\, Professor Saleem has played a pivotal role in cultivating a ‘Climate Generation’ to respond to climate change\, not only in Bangladesh but also worldwide. This emerging generation comprises academics\, researchers\, students\, youth\, children\, climate negotiators\, policymakers\, NGOs\, UN agencies\, and development partners. His passing represents a loss to this continuity of their efforts. Nevertheless\, this generation remains committed to continuing their work in the spirit of Prof. Saleem. This public lecture is dedicated to Professor Saleem and aims to educate all relevant stakeholders\, particularly youth and children\, and launch a campaign titled ‘Youth Voice for Climate Justice.’ \nSpeakers : \n⦁Prof. Dr. César Rodríguez-Garavito\, Professor\, New York University School of Law\, USA. \n⦁Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP\, Honorable Minister\, Ministry of Environment\, Forest and Climate Change\, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh \n\nDate: 16th of April 2024\, Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\,\nVenue: Auditorium\, Independent University\, Bangladesh (IUB) \nClick here for registration\nConcept Note

SUMMARY:Webinar | Responding to the Climate Crisis in Times of Uncertainty: A Clarion Call for Climate Leadership
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Global Stocktake at COP28 will evaluate how much progress has been made in the fight against the climate crisis and what more is needed to accelerate climate action forward. But global climate efforts are currently way off track\, and no one is at more risk than the vulnerable communities in the Global South who are facing a mounting debt crisis and have few resources to respond to escalating climate impacts. Without immediate leadership to drive deep emissions cuts and scale-up finance to respond to these impacts\, more people will be pushed into extreme inequality and poverty. \nWhat climate-vulnerable countries need at the COP28 climate summit in the UAE is a major course correction driven by a political response that will that rapidly decarbonize all sectors\, promote adaptation\, scale up climate finance and increase resources to address loss and damage. \nJoin the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025) consortium for a high-level webinar\, where policymakers and advocates will set clear expectations for a positive outcome at COP28 that meets the needs of climate-vulnerable countries. During the event speakers representing voices and expertise from all over the world will show where action is possible and underscore why a renewed sense of commitment to the Paris Agreement is needed to drive breakthrough solutions across the $100 billion finance commitment\, the global goal on adaptation\, loss and damage funding arrangements\, the new global goal on finance\, equitably phasing out fossil fuels and more. \nSpeakers:\n\nAna Toni\, National Secretary for Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change\, Brazil\nTina Stege\, Climate Envoy for the Marshall Islands\nCarlos Lopes\, Professor\, Nelson Mandela School\, University of Cape Town; Chair of the African Climate Foundation Board; Former Executive Secretary\, Economic Commission for Africa\nJaime de Bourbon de Parme\, Climate Envoy\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands\nAni Dasgupta\, President and CEO\, World Resources Institute (introductory remarks)\nModerator: Sharanjit Leyl\, International broadcaster\n\n\nTimezones: 8:30-10 AM EST / 2.30 – 4:00 PM CET \nThe event will be hosted in English with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and French. \nModality : Online  \nPlatform : ZOOM  \nClick here for registration\nConcept Note

SUMMARY:Policy-Lab on ‘Integrating Equity and Reframing Urban NbS in South Asian Cities’ to be held in Colombo\, Sri LankaThe objective of the Policy Lab is to co-create regional and country specific pathways for incorporating NbS in urban planning and governance to address urgent climate\, development and biodiversity issues faced by growing mid-sized cities in South Asia.
DESCRIPTION:Since the mid-2010s\, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have received growing attention in the discourse surrounding net-zero ambitions\, restoring ecosystems for sequestration\, and biodiversity conservation. This framing of NbS has emerged from global policy and the opportunities\, trade-offs and processes for implementation have not yet been examined in the context of the developing world\, especially for South Asia. Our goal is to reframe NbS to address development\, climate and biodiversity issues within the social\, political and economic context of South Asia. \nAcross South Asia\, much of the ongoing work around NbS has accorded primacy to large-scale rural projects with a primary objective of achieving sequestration goals. However\, the implementation of NbS in cities has been largely overlooked despite the fact that South Asian countries need to prepare to accommodate 250 million more people in their cities over the next 15 years. Rapid urbanisation in the region\, much of which will take place in small and medium-sized cities\, demands that NbS be considered and prioritised in the urban context. \nWith support from the Stockholm Environment Institute’s Strategic Collaborative Fund Phase 2\, ICCCAD\, along with the Transitions Research\, Colombo Urban Lab and People’s Alliance for Right to Land\, are organising a Regional Policy Lab: “Integrating Equity and Reframing Urban Nature-based Solutions” from Monday\, August 21st to Wednesday August 23rd\, 2023 in Colombo\, Sri Lanka. The objective of the Policy Lab is to co-create regional and country specific pathways for incorporating NbS in urban planning and governance to address urgent climate\, development and biodiversity issues faced by growing mid-sized cities in South Asia. \nPlease see our press release in English and Bangla for more information.

SUMMARY:Implementing Climate Justice: Solidarity with Climate Vulnerable Nations on the Road to COP28
DESCRIPTION:Climate justice and equity must be central to this year’s climate negotiations. Join #ACT2025 on June 10 as they break down the 4 key actions vulnerable countries need from policymakers at #COP28. Register here: https://bit.ly/45LwX9k \n\n\nDate: 10 June 2023\nTime: 16:15 – 17:30 (CEST)\nLocation: Room Bonn\, World Conference Centre\, Bonn \n\n\nThe Global Stocktake at COP28 will evaluate how much progress has been made in the fight against the climate crisis and what more is needed to accelerate climate action forward. But the world is way off track\, and the most vulnerable countries are already disproportionately feeling the consequences. \nThere will be no true progress on climate action until climate justice and equity become central to international climate negotiations. As negotiators gather at the UNFCCC negotiations in Bonn\, Germany in June\, the good news is we already know what countries need to do to limit the most dangerous climate impacts on communities everywhere. Negotiators in Bonn have a crucial opportunity to set the stage for COP28. \nOn Saturday June 10\, join members of the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025) consortium who will unveil their COP28 Call to Action and lay down the foundations for success at this year’s climate summit. You will hear from leading negotiators and advocates on why a political response that will that rapidly decarbonize all sectors\, promote adaptation\, scale up climate finance and increase resources to address loss and damage at COP28 is crucial. Experts will also assess whether progress is being made on these topics within the negotiation rooms and what is needed between now and the UN Climate Summit in Dubai to reach an ambitious and just COP28 outcome. \nSpeakers:\n\nAdao Soares Barbosa\, Climate Change Ambassador\, Timor Leste\nSara Ahmed\, Advisor to the Vulnerable 20 (V20) Group of Finance Ministers and Founder of the Financial Futures Center (FFC)\nMattias Söderberg\, Senior Advisor\, Danish Church Aid\nInès Bakhtaoui\, Independent Consultant on Climate Change Policy\nMamadou Sylla\, Loss and Damage Youth Coalition\nSaleemul Huq\, Director\, International Centre for Climate Change and Development\, Bangladesh (moderator)\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Workshop on Following Loss and Damage in the UNFCCC Negotiation
DESCRIPTION:The series of extreme weather events in 2022 fueled by climate change that devastated lives and livelihoods of millions – from the floods in Pakistan and China to droughts in Somalia\, Ethiopia\, Brazil\, and Europe – set a clarion call for the long-awaited climate finance\, also known as loss and damage finance. After years of hard negotiations\, at the world’s global climate change platform last year\, the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27)\, countries agreed to establish a fund to pay for climate-related losses and damages. While this has given hope to many Least Developed Countries (LDCs) that have felt the brunt of climate change\, it has also left a lot of questions unanswered. What is the arrangement for this funding mechanism? Who will pay into the fund? Who is eligible? The funds should be set up by COP28 and be up and running by 2025. Failure to do so will result in an inevitable and catastrophic future for us all – the time to act is now. \nWho is it for?Who is it for?Primarily for individuals (practitioners\, young negotiators etc.) working on Loss and Damage at national of international levels and who wish to follow on a regular basis what is happening on loss and damage in the UNFCCC process.  \nExpected Outcomes Expected Outcomes Participants will get to know what is happening on the issue of Loss and Damage in the UNFCCC process with particular emphasis on COP28 happening in Dubai in December 2023.  \n  \nLonger term prospects Longer term prospects We plan to repeat this exercise again before COP28 and also during and after COP28 for those who wish to continue to be part of the series.   \n  \nTimeline and Length Timeline and Length 17-18 May\, 2023\, 9:00 – 11:00 GMT (Bangladesh Time 15:00 – 17:00) \n  \nFees : 500 USD (partial and full fee waivers are available for suitable participants)  \nModality : Online  \nPlatform : Microsoft Teams  \nDownload Flyer\nApply Here\nDeadline for Submitting Application  \n11 May\, 2023 (Early Application is encouraged) \n\nContact Person  \nS M Saify Iqbal\, Programme Coordinator\, ICCCAD\, Email: saify.iqbal@icccad.org  \n  \n

SUMMARY:South Asia Regional Resilience Hub
DESCRIPTION:  \nICCCAD believes that placing local constituencies from local geographies at the center of the discussion allows front-line leaders to share their local adaptation strategies and internal knowledge and experience to engage with external knowledge and enhance their understanding of the impact of climate. Movement building is most effective within your own locality. Organizing constituencies within local geographies makes it easier to understand the nature of power\, engage with it\, demand accountability and be accountable. \n\nProgramme of Events\nThe inaugural event of this year’s South Asia Regional Resilience Hub will be held on 20 September 2022 virtually with the speech from world renown climate scientist Dr. Saleemul Huq\, Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD). The ICCCAD will host the event focusing on the frontline people who directly dealing with the adverse effect of climate change in South Asia.\nThe events hosted at the South Asia Region Hub at COP26 was an eye opener and gave ICCCAD a glimpse of the possibilities of going deeper and engaging specific geographical constituencies from the frontlines at the regional hub at COP27.\nICCCAD believes that by placing specific constituencies at the center of these discussions gives a deeper\, more nuanced and rounded understanding of specific local adaptation strategies and vulnerabilities based on specific geographies.\n To know more visit the event page

SUMMARY:LLA TALKS | From a fast vanishing riverine landscape
DESCRIPTION:‘From a fast vanishing riverine landscape’: tales of uncertainty\, resilience and transformation through visual stories and narratives\n\n\nDate: 09 November\, 2021 \n\nTime: 10.30-11.30am UK time\nWhere: In person at the LLA Hub in Blue Zone + online\nVisit Event page \n\nThe session sketches the issues of lived experiences representing climate change\, uncertainty and transformative actions in Sundarbans. The participants of these visual methods tell how climate change has adversely affected farmers and fishermen alike with unpredictable rainfall patterns and continue to make traditional cropping difficult. Through photos and narratives\, the stories of history and sense of place will be told from the vantage point of women and youth that are at the forefront of climate change. The photos and narratives synthesise local experience and organise shared collective analysis of the relationships between problems and their causes. The process of reflection and reflexivity is directly linked to action for climate justice and is shaped by an understanding of history\, culture and local context. \nRead More \n\nThose who will not be able to participate physically in the session\, use the link below to watch live on the YouTube channel \nLink:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGgb2lCUZgs.  \nWe look forward to seeing you tomorrow\, whether in person or online.
